Caregiver in Huntington Beach CA
Most family caregivers feel resentment and anger over their caregiving responsibilities. As rewarding as this role can be, not getting the recognition they deserve can cause the family member to lose the determination and enthusiasm they once had.
Some days may be full of joy and contentment at being in the company of one another, while other days may be full of crankiness and stubbornness by the elder. During these days, you may be wondering why you volunteered to take on these responsibilities. Although the elder may not show their appreciation for all you do, there are other ways to get back the passion you once had for the job.
Do not be Afraid to Brag a Little
Just because you are not getting the pats on the back you deserve, does not mean your efforts are going unnoticed. But just in case other family members do not understand all you do for the elder, you have every right to keep them informed. For example, you could send out a mass email describing all of the activities, appointments, and daily tasks you have been a part of.
Make the First Move
If you want to set the tone for more appreciation from your elderly loved one, you may need to thank them first. Let them know how thankful you are for all they did for you during your childhood or early adulthood. This is a great way to get the ball rolling and have the senior to begin noticing all you do for them on a daily basis.
Provide a Lighthearted, Gentle Reminder
The senior most likely is not ignoring your efforts on purpose, they just need to be reminded to say “thank you” every once in a while. The best way to do this is through a little humor. For example, you could say, “you don’t have to thank me. I’m in it for the money.” A small lighthearted reminder may be all you need to get the praise you deserve.
Be Your Own Cheerleader
Even after expressing to other family members everything you do and showing how thankful you are for the elder, they may still not be showing you the respect and appreciation you deserve. In these cases, all you can do is be proud of the things you do. Knowing that you are making life easier for your aging parent should help you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Caregiving can be a stressful job, but by getting a little recognition, you will be reminded of how important your role in their life is.
