Wildfires are becoming more and more common, especially when winters don’t produce enough snow and many areas are in drought conditions. Seniors that are living independently in their family homes need to be prepared for wildfires the same way that they need to be prepared for any other type of natural disaster. In-home care providers can help seniors in many different ways, including helping them get ready for disasters.
But because wildfires move fast and are unpredictable, seniors may not always have a lot of time to get out of the house if there is a wildfire in the area. One thing seniors should never do is wait to evacuate. If there is a fire in the area seniors should immediately evacuate so they aren’t stranded if the fire comes their way.
Seniors should also do these things to be prepared for wildfires:
Get In-Home Care
If a disaster happens your senior parent won’t be alone if they have in-home care. Your senior parent will have someone with them to keep an eye on the news, help them get to safety, and make sure that they have all the emergency supplies that they need. A home care provider can also be your point of contact so that you can check on your senior parent and make sure they are ok if they aren’t able to get to you.
Have An Emergency Bag Packed
Seniors should have an emergency bag packed that contains extra clothes, extra briefs, important papers, their insurance information, and other essentials that would be difficult or impossible to replace if they were lost. Having all of those things already packed along with some emergency supplies like a mask and some water will make it possible for seniors to grab their bags and go if they need to evacuate. If your senior parent has a pet there should be a carrier and a packed bag for the pet that has their medical records and other information in it as well as food and water ready to go also.
Have Extra Medications And Essentials In A Safe Place
It’s always smart for seniors to have extra medications or medical equipment that they need in a safe place so that if they have to get out of the house fast they can get the medications they need and equipment like a CPAP or supplemental oxygen tank without having to take precious time to grab them as they leave. Most seniors store extra medications and equipment at the home of their adult children, a relative, or a close friend just in case.
Have Emergency Transportation Ready To Go
If your senior parent doesn’t drive they will need a fast way to get to safety. Rideshares and taxis may not be running if there is an emergency. Seniors with in-home care will have the transportation they need to get to safety, but it’s a good idea to have a backup plan for transportation too.
