You’ve got to admit that a celebration called Spunky Old Broads Month gets attention. If your elderly loved one needs a little encouragement and support in adding some spunk into her life, consider having a companion care at home provider join her in her endeavors. But what does it mean to participate in and celebrate Spunky Old Broads Month?

Spunky Old Broads History

Dr. Gayle Carson started Spunky Old Broads Month in 2002. As a self-described Spunky Old Broad herself, she started with a day to celebrate women who are out-spoken, brave, intelligent, and engaged in the world around them but soon found a day wasn’t enough and declared the entire month of February to be Spunky Old Broad Month.

Feeling that many women become “invisible” after the age of 50, she wanted to create a new viewpoint on older women who are far from invisible but actively engaging in the world around them, making a difference and influencing those around them. Each year, she chooses a new woman to be the Spunky Old Broad of the Year, with winners including Dolly Parton, Michelle Obama, and Katie Couric.

Five Tips to Becoming a Spunky Old Broad

Dr. Carson wants older women to celebrate the month by doing something they’ve never done before. Taking a risk and trying something completely new. They don’t need to succeed, failing is a great testament to any Spunky Old Broad. They simply need the courage to try something new.

Here are five ways your elderly loved one can step out of her comfort zone and try something new in February.

Start a new hobby. Is there something your loved one has always wanted to do but never had the time to learn how to do it? It could be a physical activity such as learning to kayak or it could be a crafty activity such as learning how to make candles. It doesn’t have to be wild, just new to your loved one.

Try a new food. February is a great month to get out and try new food. Maybe it’s an entire cuisine like Thai food, or maybe it’s something specific like oysters.

Make new friends. Joining a local club or group is a great way for your loved one to meet new people and make new friends.

Visit someplace new. It can be a trip to Bora Bora, or it can simply be a visit to an antique store she’s never visited before.

Laugh a lot more. Spunky Old Broads love life so encourage your loved one to do the things she loves and share her passions with those around her.
